The Ingratitude of the "Free Software Advocate"

For months Roy Schestowitz beat the drum over the "necessity" of getting Mono out of Ubuntu. It wasn't enough that removing Mono was quite trivial, nor there were already plenty of Mono-free distros out there; it had to come out!

We had claims of censorship, demands that people be removed from their positions, both professional and voluntary. We had disruptions of mailing lists, intrusions into people's private lives. It was that "important".

Did Roy put his name in for the Ubuntu Technical Board when nominations were open? Did any of the strident Microsoft-haters? No, not a single one. Too busy "advocating".

Finally, Jo Shields, the packager for Mono, had enough, and spun the "Chicken Little Remix" for those who fear the imminent falling of the sky.

A fine-looking fowl. Shouldn't it be looking up, though? (Wallpaper courtesy of Jo Shields.)

Was there gratitude? No. Roy assiduously avoided even mentioning it for a considerable time, even while it was the subject of much discussion on the oft-quoted (at least when it serves Roy's "interests") "Mono-Nono" site. (In fact, Mono-Nono was the only one of the regularly Mono-phobic sites which discussed it at all...) The discussion was interesting as well: the very first thing to come up was the issue of whether Jo was going to be maintaining or updating it. Jo, pretty sensibly, replied that this was, as he had demonstrated, quite trivial, and if anyone wanted it, they were quite welcome to maintain it themselves. This subsequent call for people to sign up for such an effort led to a Great Silence, interspersed with the occasional sound of distant crickets in a moonlit night.

And now, Roy's "insulted" that Jo gave him exactly what he wanted.

There's simply no pleasing some people. It's not enough that Roy and his gang get what they want, handed to them, on a silver platter, with no heavy lifting at all on their part. It won't be enough for them until everyone does what they demand, it seems.

Newsflash

Contrary to the representations of Bruce "What's the problem?" Perens and others, it seems that Richard Stallman is indeed capable of issuing (or perhaps, being made to issue) an apology!
